On September 17, a remarkable spirit of camaraderie and gratitude was witnessed in Millsboro, Delaware, as local tree care specialists came together to enhance the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. This event, part of the national initiative known as “Saluting Branches,” saw tree care professionals donate their time and expertise to ensure that those who served in the military are honored with a beautifully maintained resting place.

Toby Schlick, owner of Complete Tree Care and a veteran himself, expressed the significance of this annual event. “The guys all look forward to it—giving back to the community for our veterans,” he said. With a sense of purpose, three local companies, including Cypress Tree Care and Tri-State Tree Care, banded together to clear away dead branches, enhance the landscaping, and trim down trees, transforming the cemetery.

According to Robert Logan from Cypress Tree Care, the Saluting Branches initiative extends far beyond Delaware. It encompasses over 100 locations across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, with the ambitious goal of raising $5 million this year for veterans. Each year, tree companies dedicate a full day to providing essential care, which would normally cost cemeteries thousands of dollars.
Support Beyond the Trees: A Community Effort
While these companies worked diligently, support came from other local businesses to ensure that volunteers were well-fed during their hard work. Lisa Lasher, co-owner of Lasher’s Barbecue, generously provided hot lunches free of charge. “It’s a small way to show our appreciation for them,” she stated, highlighting the communal effort to support veterans.

Since its inception in 2015, Saluting Branches has made a significant impact, with volunteers collectively donating more than 88,000 hours of tree care services, which equates to over $11 million worth of assistance to veterans' cemeteries nationwide.
